Year 4 children at Ranby House School recently travelled to York for a day at Holgate Saxon Village. The pupils had a truly fantastic day dressing up and experiencing life as a Saxon.

They were shown how the Saxons made ceramic pots and then made their own. They ground flour on a quern and then made bread using traditional Saxon utensils and their methods of cooking.

The pupils defended the village from Viking attackers and were taught farming methods used in Saxon times and undertook the farming methods using the traditional tools.

Finally, the children enjoyed a Saxon Banquet in a traditional village hut. A superbly interesting and informative day that the children thoroughly enjoyed and from which they gained an enormous amount of knowledge about the Saxon times.
