26 May 2011
Three pupils from Abingdon School have had their artwork shortlisted for the online Royal Academy Summer Exhibition of A Level work www.royalacademy.org.uk/alevel. The sixth formers, Jack Oliver, aged 18 from Watlington, Nicholas Topping, 16, from East Hagbourne and Ben Westcott, 18, from Headington, are delighted to have reached this stage in the national competition. Ben Westcott said, ‘"I can't believe I actually got shortlisted! I am very happy!"
James Nairne, Head of Art at Abingdon said, ‘This is the third out of the last five years that Abingdon sixth formers have had their work shortlisted for this prestigious competition. It is a huge boost for the boys and a tremendous independent endorsement of the excellent standard of art that they create. It is very well deserved.’
The online exhibition is open to all students at secondary schools and sixth form colleges in the UK who are currently studying A levels, Higher/Advanced Higher or IB. The Abingdon boys’ work is part of an initial selection of around 100 pieces chosen from 950 submissions. The short-listed submissions will be judged by a panel, including Michael Landy, RA, and Director of the Royal Academy Exhibitions, Kathleen Soriano. The final selection is announced on June 7.
